"Bakje troost" is a Dutch slang term for a cup of coffee, literally translating to a "little cup of comfort" or "little cup of solace". It's an informal and affectionate way to offer or ask for a cup of coffee, implying it's meant to provide some comfort or a break. "Bakje" is a diminutive (little) form of "bak," meaning vessel or cup, and "troost" means comfort or solace. The phrase is used in informal situations, much like saying "a cup of joe" in English.
Holland has many excellent coffee shops where you can get your “bakje troost”. But if you are anything like us, it can be easy to get stuck in a rut of routine and never venture beyond your tried-and-true coffee stop. The list of shops below may open your eyes to other café options and give you a reason to try something new.
