Autumn has arrived. Before we know it, orange, yellow, and apple red will be dripping from the trees, bubbling up in our coffee, and popping out on our porch. To some, this season is merely the death of summer. But, if you let it, autumn can take on a life of its own. Here are just a few of the events and activities that wouldn’t be quite the same in any other season:
Fall Fest at Crisp Country Acres
Visit this sweet, local farm on September 20th from 10am-2pm for a unique fall experience. You can take a free wagon ride through their fields, play games, and take pictures with a variety of decorated hay bails. Vote for your favorite! They also have a corn maze that is only $3 per person.
While you are there, take advantage of their U-Pick flowers and vegetables. Fresh tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, peppers, and beans are in season and ready for your next meal. The vegetables are $1/lb when you pick them yourselves and the flowers are $5 for every 10 stems. Fall is the perfect time to bring in your own little harvest and enjoy the rich taste of local farm foods.
On Friday, October 3rd and Saturday, October 4th, the best of fall is being brought right into the heart of downtown Holland. There will be hay rides and trucks at Windmill Island Gardens and a Fire Truck parade on 8th street. You can watch professional pumpkin carvers work their magic or purchase a mini pumpkin for $1 and let your child create their own masterpiece. Visit the Downtown Holland website to plan your weekend at Fall Fest.
Holland’s community tulip planting is also going on during the festival. Have you ever wondered how all of those tulips end up in such full flower beds every single year? Volunteers from every corner of the city join Tulip Time and the City of Holland Parks Department to plant new tulips each fall so that the flowers are always looking their best when spring comes around. It is a real community effort with some beautiful pay-off. Sign-up here for tulip planting and become a part of the tulip festival in a new and special way. When the time comes, you will be able to watch as tulips that you planted begin to bud and bloom in the city’s flower beds.
Settled just south of Holland in Fennville, Crane Orchards is a favorite fall stop for many. When it comes to classic fall activities, they have it all: apple picking, hay rides, a corn maze, and a pumpkin patch. Their apples are $1.65/lb and they have over twenty varieties available at different times throughout the fall. To see what apples will be in season when you visit, click here.
Cemetery Tour with Holland Tasting Tours
While these cemetery tours are available all year round, they are a special experience in the fall. As the world prepares for winter, you can gather at the Pilgrim Home Cemetery to honor those who have passed into a winter of their own. You can honor them by listening to their stories, learning from their experiences, and enjoying the great variety found in human life. These tours are made especially pleasant by the fall leaves decorating the cemetery and the crisp, cool air as you walk along.
No matter what kinds of activities you enjoy, the fall can be full of excitement. Just get out into the fresh air and embrace the season!
